About the Artist

ira bekkerI fell in love with mosaic in Spain and again in Morocco and time and time again since that. When I create mosaic for my own enjoyment I use subtle colours and exquisite detail. Soft blues and intermingled greens juxtaposed with rich oranges and mottled whites of koifish…olive greens and shades of stone shaped into hundreds of pebbles interspersed by circles of red, ochre and burnt orange…soft pink roses surrounded by delightfully detailed little flowers on a sky blue background with dragonflies flitting about.

On a more expanded scale I enjoy the broadness of the brushstrokes the boldness of the colours, the play of different textures and the way a mosaic can pull together all the design elements of a space into a coherent whole and add what was missing before like a bow on a gift. For these projects I collaborate from conceptual stage through to the final design with the project manager after which I create the mosaic in my studio with the assistance of trained young African mosaic artists.

Recently I have created some wonderful pieces working largely on my own with the occasional assistance of Bongani, a young artist who has worked with me for some years now. As much as I have developed my own style of mosaic over the years I am very happy to be challenged by designs that require of me to explore new techniques and materials. This year my projects were executed in ceramic, porcelain and for the first time using Mexican smalti. My most recent projects include Cave Canem, a Highveld Flora scene, Portrait of Dora Maar by Picasso and The Birds, a textile design by William Morris. My nex project is The Irises by Monet for a fountain at a private home in Inanda.

I am self taught and have made my mistakes but after ten years of creating mosaic I am confident that my work is of the most professional available in South Africa. I love the challenge of every new project, the design process and seeing it through to completion. I have been blessed with the most wonderful clients who have put absolute faith in me to create beautiful works for their homes and enable me on an ongoing basis to hone my skills and develop my artistic abilities.
